about

The Great Hunger, known to the Irish as "an Gorta Mór," took over a million lives and forced millions of Irish people from their homes between 1845 and 1852. Along with starvation and disease caused by blight ridden crops, high taxes and rent implemented by the British landowners forced people to emigrate to other countries, leaving their identities and culture behind. Many sought refuge in Canada.

After a long journey across the North Atlantic, PARTRIDGE ISLAND marked their arrival to New Brunswick. Sitting just off the coast of Saint John, the island was used as a quarantine station and was crucial in combating the typhus outbreak of 1847. The outbreak was caused by the horrifically unsanitary conditions of the ships transporting the Irish people. Documented accounts from those who went aboard the vessels described the floors as being covered with corpses and filth reaching past your ankles. They became known as "coffin ships."

In 1927, the province of New Brunswick placed a memorial Celtic Cross on Partridge Island and dedicated it to the Irish dead of 1847. It is now a national and provincial historic site. This Album is a tribute
to those who lost their lives during the Great Hunger and the immigrants who were fortunate enough to survive and make new lives in Canada.
